Join Us in Advocating for
LVTs in Texas!

Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs) are the backbone of quality animal healthcare in the great state of Texas, bringing advanced education, clinical expertise, and compassionate care to every patient they serve. From anesthesia monitoring and dental procedures to client education and critical care, LVTs elevate the standard of veterinary medicine and protect the well-being of animals and the families who love them. Yet our profession deserves stronger recognition, title protection, and a unified voice to ensure that our skills are respected and fully utilized. By standing together, advocating for fair compensation, clearer scope of practice, and public awareness of our credentials, we strengthen not only our careers but the entire veterinary community. Now is the time for LVTs and supporters across Texas to unite, speak up, and champion the value of credentialed technicians—because together, we are stronger, louder, and capable of creating lasting change for our profession and the patients who depend on us.

Public Comment Regarding Chapters 571 and 575

Dear Members of the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and Texas Representatives,

I am writing regarding Chapters 571 and 575 to respectfully request strengthened language
addressing both title protection and scope of duties for Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs)
in Texas.
The addition of the titles “Veterinary Technician” and “Vet Tech” to the list of protected
designations under Chapter 571 would ensure they are afforded the same legal protection as
“Licensed Veterinary Technician” and reserved exclusively for individuals holding an active
license in the State of Texas. The rule should further prohibit the use of any title, abbreviation, or
representation that would reasonably lead the public to believe an individual holds veterinary
technician licensure when such licensure has not been granted by the Board.
Allowing unlicensed individuals to use the title “Veterinary Technician” creates confusion for pet
owners and undermines the professional standards intended to safeguard patients. Clear title
protection promotes transparency, strengthens accountability, and reinforces public trust in the
veterinary profession.
Additionally, Chapter 575 would benefit from a more precise and explicit delineation of tasks
reserved for Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs). Advanced medical procedures requiring
formal veterinary technology education, accredited clinical training, and demonstrated
competency—such as anesthesia induction and monitoring, and endotracheal intubation should
be expressly identified within rule language as functions restricted to individuals holding current
LVT licensure.
Clarifying that such procedures fall within the exclusive scope of LVTs' duties would promote
uniformity in regulatory interpretation, enhance patient safety, and ensure that individuals
performing advanced medical tasks have the requisite education, training, and professional
accountability established through licensure.
Strengthening both title protection and scope clarification aligns with the Board’s mission to
protect the public and supports the continued advancement of veterinary medicine in Texas.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration.

Respectfully,

[Your Name and Licensure]
